COMPLEX AND SEQUENTIAL EVOLUTIONARY ALGORITHMS FOR UNIT COMMITMENT AND ECONOMIC POWER DISPATCH


Two evolutionary algorithms: complex and sequential for solving the optimizing problem of economic dispatch and thermal unit commitment are presented. Real number encoding scheme, specific genetic operators and methods for the elimination of constraints in the cost function are described. Methods incorporate time-dependent start-up costs, demand and reserve constraints, minimum up and down time constraints and unit power generation limits. The complex evolutionary algorithm searches a complete solution space but computer execution time for this method is very immense for practical systems. Solution space in the sequential evolutionary algorithm is very limited so execution time is short but suboptimal solutions are achieved. The efficiency of the proposed algorithms is illustrated using an example.
