The method of calculating the adaptive pressure for proportional selection


It is commonly acknowledged that populations evolving in a trait space are moved forward to more advantageous phenotypes. In this paper the method of calculating the value of the pressure induced for the move is presented. The proposed formula allows calculation of the function representing the value of this pressure and makes the function dependent on a particular individual`s phenotype, the shape of an adaptive space and the level of mutation. The evolutionary model of phenotypic evolution with proportional selection and onedimensional adaptive landscapes is regarded with two types of fitness function: the tent function and the Gaussian function. The calculations were compared with simulation results while taking into consideration the characteristics of a mosaic environment. A mosaic environment consists of different evolutionary niches and therefore enables comparison of different dynamics which attempt to move a population to optima of distinct fitness functions.
